Rashmi Singh embodies “vartma” in the field of education. As Ashoka University’s founding director of student life, she helped produce the roadmap for our new institution’s vision of a uniquely Indian liberal education. That map has guided Ashoka students for more than a decade now, transporting them out of the classroom and into the world, empowering them to negotiate its cultural diversity with curiosity, versatility and empathy. Rashmi understands that the literal meaning of “education” is “leading out”: with compassion and humour, she has a gift in coaxing students out of themselves into new spaces of possibility, where they can also lead others by inspirational example.
Rashmi Singh is truly an educator par excellence. Her deep and nuanced understanding of education, spanning both primary and higher education spaces, has been transformative for institutions and individuals alike. A pioneer in introducing and institutionalising the student affairs profession in Indian higher education, she has shaped practices that place students at the centre of learning and development. As my former teacher, colleague, and mentor, her leadership exemplifies intellectual rigour, compassion, and vision. I consider it a rare privilege to have learned under her mentorship and to have witnessed her impact on the evolving landscape of higher education, particularly in private liberal arts institutions, in India.
Working under Miss Rashmi Singh was my first experience of working in a professional setting. As someone who was completely new, I was truly grateful for her enthusiasm, patience, and constant support, which helped me learn and improve every day.
